I gave my previous H&R 223 to my nephew for him to keep for my grandnephew to grow into. Since then, I have purchased a H&R Super Light Youth Model (SLYM) in 223. Out the box, the rifle is 33″ long and weighs 5.3 lbs. The barrel is 20″ long with a 1:9 twist. With scope, light and sling, the total package weighs 7.2 lbs.
This rifle will be a mission specific platform outfitted and used exclusively for ‘coon hunting. It will never see a jacketed bullet.
Because the twist matches that of the barrel I had such good success with using 2.6 grs. of Red Dot with the Lyman 225415, I decided to start with that load.
Below are documented targets I have shot with this rifle.
I also ran a test using the Lyman 225415 and Red Dot form 2.2 grs. to 4.0 grs. in .2 gr. increments. Except for the almost ever-present flier, the 2.6 gr. load performed well.
The 2.8 gr. load below is useable for small game out to 50 yards. I think I can improve it.
